The 2017 Illawarra Folk Festival - 5th Youth Traditions Awards - WINNERS

The 2017 Illawarra Folk Festival - 5th Youth Traditions Awards encouraged and celebrated young artists (under 25) performing traditional folk songs and tunes from Australia and abroad. They also  inspired young artists to explore their cultural heritage, reinterpret traditional songs and to write new songs & tunes in the folk traditions.

Winners shared in $500 worth of cash prizes donated by Dr Judy Stubbs and Associate, The Bulli Medical Practice and the Wongawilli Colonial Dancers, and received Illawarra Folk Festival CDs. Winners will also get further performing opportunities.

The judges would like to commend all who entered for the quality of the performances.

The 2017 winners were:

1.    Best Performance of a traditional Australian folk song

Winner: Missy Jones      

2.    Best Performance of a traditional folk song from another culture

Winner: Miranda Rogers      

3.    Best Performance of a traditional folk tune (or set of tunes)

Winner: Tim Lukey &  Paddy Kelly

4.    Best Performance of an original song following a folk tradition

Winner: Missy Jones      

Highly commended: Shalani Thomas and Kira Garland

 

Youth Tradition Encouragement Awards were given to:

Ben Johnson, Taran Garland, Beth Jackson and Josh Grendy
