ILLAWARRA FOLK FESTIVAL 25th SILVER ANNIVERSARY
Tickets on Sale Now
From Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th January, The Bulli Showgrounds at Slacky Flat will become the Mecca for Folk enthusiasts throughout the state when over 500 performers will gather to celebrate the 25th award winning Illawarra Folk Festival.
In keeping with the evolving nature of the genre, the Festival will feature music from different cultures and different styles. You can pick up on Gypsy, Cajun, African, Roots, blues, bluegrass , world and Celtic as well as the traditional Singers and songwriters and Australian Traditional music; all performed by some of Australia’s best. Another highlight will be the colourful dancers with their attendant music performed by the rich tapestry of ethnic diversity that makes up the Illawarra Community.
Heading a strong overseas contingent will be Nano Stern from Chile, Nathan from Canada and John Egenes from NZ. As usual there will be a strong interstate contingent with Damian Howard and the Ploughboys (Vic), A French Butler Called Smith (Qld), Bernard Carney (WA), Cloudstreet (Qld), Go Set (Vic), Rough Red (Qld), The Borderers (SA), Ballpoint Penguins (WA) and Coolgrass (Vic) being just a few of Australia Wide significance.
From local and NSW sources come Wongawilli, Dog Trumpet (Reg Mombassa), Wheeze and Suck Band, Jan Preston, Handsome Young Strangers and the enigmatic Doc Jones and the Lechery Band.
It is an absolute feast of talent.
The Festival has always been a family affair since its inception and this year is no exception with specialist events threading their way through the programme. A special Kids programme means that all ages are catered for and of course kids under 12 yrs are free.
The spoken word and poets are well catered for as well with poets breakfasts, Limerick Competitions, Woolly Yarn Spinning. A host of other participatory events, including a special Kids programme, means that all ages are catered for.
With its 11 venues and 500 performers the hardest thing to decide is what to do and what to see. If you can’t decide then you could head on over to the Slacky Flat Bar for the all round party!
