Since it’s inception in 1999, the Italian Lunch, has been a popular introduction to the Illawarra Folk Festival for a growing number of people. The Italian and Folk communities come together to create a welcoming atmosphere, as they enjoy a hearty lunch of famously good Italian food.  Come and be caught up in the irrepressible spirit of Italy, with singing, laughing, dancing in the aisles (and sometimes on the tables), and of course eating.  It’s an afternoon in a make believe Neapolitan villa and kitchen, brought to the Illawarra with the flair, style, jovial cheekiness and drama that makes for a fantastic Italian Lunch.

Zumpa!, a collaboration of Italian and Australian musicians (with a bit of African flavour for good measure) will lead the charge of musical talent for the afternoon.  The dancing and good fun comes naturally, courtesy of a vibrant Italian community, but beware it IS infectious!!

The energy is exuberant, as we listen and dance to traditional tarantellas, quadriglias, mazurkas, waltzes, old songs and some new ones. If you want to know how to dance Italian style, there is sure to be a Nonna or a Mamma to help you on your way! If not, no worries, with piano accordion, saxophone, clarinet, violin, bouzouki, piano and plenty of percussion you are sure to experience your first dance of the Festival at this extravaganza of an Italian Party!

The Italian Lunch has been privileged to host many special guests over the years.  Having laughed, danced and sung with Kavisha Mazzella, Nonna (Giri Mazzella), Ekosi Multicultural Women's Choir, Joe Dolce and Eugenio Bennato & Musica Nova, all the way from Naples, the organisers are often amazed at the talent that springs from the crowd to help the celebrations along.

Every year the party grows bigger and bigger, as many more people join in the fun, the food and the music that makes up the lives and stories of the Italian immigrant community of the Illawarra region.
